WAKEFIELD MORRIS DANCERS HISTORY The Eighties
WAKEFIELD MORRIS DANCERS
The First Decade
The Eighties
Where it all began.

This was the first decade the team danced in although some have theories that the team actually started in 1979. Whatever the year the teams origins could be tracked back to the "Nether Shitlington Clodhopppers", a Cotswold(ish) team formed as part of the Netherton Carnival event. The team name derived from an old english name for the parish now known as Sitlington. To the enthusiasm of some of the dancers was added the vision of an itineratnt clog maker, one Trefor Owen. Trefor had ideas as to what North West Morris should be. What was needed was a catalyst to bring these two elements together. This came in the shape of the Wakefield Mystery Plays.
